From October 2012. This was a big deal. I’ve been following Matthew Woodsons career for a while now. Years even. And with our magazines we don’t often get to use illustration, and when we do it requires a certain style. But when this hunting story came around I knew Matthew was the only person for the job, and when he said yes, it was a high point in my career. The basic idea behind the piece is it’s a experiential story about the writer (Masa Takei’s) first time hunting and the emotions, ethics, and reasoning behind why he continues to do it today. The concept for the piece came from a line in the story where he says “I have passed on as many animals as I’ve killed, even with my sights set squarely on them. This may sound contradictory, but that’s the way it is”. I wanted to capture that moment with a deer in his sights, and it’s decision time. Matthew nailed it. Not only is it a dead on illustration of Masa, but you can see the emotion in his face.
